An elected Clerk heads the City Clerk’s office which provides many
services to benefit the public. They administer elections and can
assist in registering to vote, obtaining absentee ballots,
appointing election precinct inspectors for Election Day, providing
candidate packets to be a candidate for a municipal office, and having
election results on file.
The Office of the City
Clerk also is the licensing entity for purchasing dog licenses or
business operating licenses. In addition, they prepare the City
Council and Plan Commission agendas and can provide the public with
copies of the minutes. They also can provide copies of Ordinances
when adopted by the City Council and maintains the permanent bid list.

PASSPORTS:
You may apply for a Passport between 8
am and 3:30 pm.

your Birth Certificate (which will be returned with your passport
by the passport processing agency)

- Processing fee $30 payable to the City of Southgate
- Processing passport fee $67 payable to the US Department of State
Once
you have applied for a passport, it will take 6 to 8 weeks to receive.
NOTARY
SERVICE:
Offered at the cost of $5 for residents and $10 for non residents.
EMPLOYMENT:
The City Clerk's Office accepts employment applications year round from
those interested in part time or seasonal employment. The City of Southgate advertises in the
News Herald, Detroit News and Michigan Chronicle for entry-level union
positions every other year.

requires that businesses obtain annual licenses which are due by
January 1, every year.

by mail, download and complete the Voter Registration Application
and return to the Office of the City Clerk, 14400 Dix-Toledo Highway,
Southgate, MI 48195.

in person at the above mentioned office or any Secretary of State
facility to register to vote.
PRECINCT WORKERS:

If interested in applying
for the position of Election Inspector, download the application
and return to the Office of the City Clerk, 14400 Dix-Toledo Highway,
Southgate, MI 48195.

The current pay rates
are; Chairperson - $140, Co-Chairperson $132, Inspector $120.

Training session is
mandatory and compensation for said session is $15.

- The deadline for applying fro an absentee
ballot by mail is the Saturday prior to Election Day at 2 pm.

GARAGE SALE
PERMITS:
Please be advised that on October 6, 2004, the Southgate City Council
adopted Ordinance No. 797 requiring that persons interesting in holding
Garage or Yard Sales must apply for a license at the Office of the City
Clerk, 14400 Dix-Toledo, Southgate, MI 48195. Fee: $5 (five
dollars)
YOUR VOTE DOES
MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
If you are a citizen of
the United States and 18 years of age, make sure you are registered
to vote. www.michigan.gov/sos
Registration deadlines are 30
days before an election.
If you cannot go to the polls on election
day you are eligible to obtain an absentee ballot if you:
- are 60 years of age or older
- are physically unable to attend the
poll
- will be out of town on election day
- are assigned to work the polls as a
precinct worker
- cannot attend the polls because of the
tenants of your religion
- are in jail awaiting arraignment
If anyone of these apply
to you, contact us for an application for an absentee ballot or write
the Clerk a letter stating your name, address, what election you need
a ballot for, and the reason. Make sure you sign your request.
You must always request an absentee ballot in writing.
