BASKETBALL
This program is for 4th through 6th
graders that reside in Southgate or attend Southgate schools. Boys and
girls teams will be formed by the neighborhood school they attended and/or the availability of coaches. Games will be played Friday evenings or
Saturday mornings.
BASEBALL
Our city has 10 baseball/softball diamonds for all ages
to enjoy. The Southgate Baseball Association drafts baseball teams
early in spring. Registration begins the first 2 Saturdays in
March (location and time will be announced) Birth certificate is mandatory
at time of registration. Tryouts are tentatively scheduled to start in
April. Non-Residents are Welcome!
Age divisions are as follows:
Instructional League (coach pitch) 6 - 8 yrs.
Junior Division 9 -10 yrs.
Senior Division 11 -12 yrs.
Pony League 13 -14 yrs.
Colt League 15 -17 yrs.
CHEERLEADING 101
This is a beginner cheerleading class that teaches the participants how
to successfully lead cheers. Focus will be placed on confidence, voice
projection and inflection, motion technique, proper body positioning and
precision. Cheerleaders will learn chants and cheers. An advanced class
will be offered as well. This program is for children ages 4 through 13.
DANCE PROGRAM
There are tot through teen classes held at the Civic Center. Classes meet
once a week from the beginning of October thru the end of May with a
dance recital culminating the season. Registration is held the end of
September. You have the option to pay by session or in full. We will
take registrations throughout the dance season but children must be
registered by the second session to participate in the
recital. Classes offered are pre-dance, ballet, tap, jazz/hip-hop, and gymnastics. For more information, please

GATOR
This program is for children ages 6 and up that
are able to swim the length of the pool. This is a competitive
league. Practices are held at Southgate Anderson High School on
Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays with varied times, subject to change. Season runs for approximately 2
months. We offer Winter, Spring and Summer seasons.
IN-LINE
HOCKEY
We offer a competitive program of in-line hockey. Our
In-Line Rink is located on Dix-Toledo Road right here in our complex.
Playoff games are played at the end of the season and Trophies/Medals are
given for all participants for both Adult and Youth leagues. Please

Registration includes jersey.
Adult leagues have the following age divisions:
Adams: 30 & over
Norris: 21 & over
Patrick: 16-20 yr. olds
Players can register as a team or individual.

KARATE
This introductory program is designed to teach new
students the basic principles and concepts of Korean Karate. For students ages 6 and older. Each session is 7 weeks long and is held
throughout the school year consecutively. Classes meet once a week for 1
hour at the Tang Soo Do College, in Wyandotte, please register at the
Parks and Recreation office.
SAFETY TOWN
This is a week long camp of activities geared for
children starting Kindergarten in the fall. Safety town is held the first
week of August at our Civic Arena. Morning and afternoon sessions are
offered. Children will learn safe
living habits about traffic and fire safety, home safety, school bus
safety, the playground and around strangers. A Policeman and a Fireman
make a visit to talk to the children. Registration begins in June.
SOCCER
This coed program is an instructional format to teach
budding soccer players the basics of soccer. Games are played at Davidson
Middle School or Chormann Elementary. Birth Certificate is mandatory at
the time of registration. Age divisions: U6, U8, U10, U12, U15 Volunteer coaches
and sponsors are needed.
Spring Season (Register in February) Games played
in April & May.
Fall Season (Register in July) Games played in
September & October.
SOCCER - TINY TOT
This is an instructional program filled with fun
and exciting drills and games for 4 & 5 year old beginner soccer players.
Birth Certificate is mandatory at the time of registration. Register in
May for this program that runs from June thru July.
SUMMER
ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Southgate resident children ages 5 through
12 are invited to register at Homer Howard Park for the Summer
Enrichment Program. There is a one time registration fee of $40.
There are nominal fees if your child participates in field trips. The park program begins in June after school
lets out for summer vacation and ends the last Friday in July.
SOFTBALL - ADULT
Spring and fall seasons are offered. Leagues
include men’s Sunday, coed or women’s weekday divisions depending on
registration. Register for the spring season in
February and register in July for the fall season. For more information,

SOFTBALL
Registration for girls softball is the same as
boys baseball (see above). Birth certificate is mandatory at time of
registration.
Age divisions for slow pitch are as follows:
Instructional League: 7 - 9 yrs.
Junior League: 9 -12 yrs.
Senior League: 13 -16 yrs.
Age divisions for fast pitch are as follows:
10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under and 16 & under.
T-BALL
This is a coed program for Southgate residents, ages 5 through 8 yrs.
old. Birth certificate is required at time of registration. There is
a fee for this program which runs from the end of May to the
beginning of August. All games are played on Saturday mornings here at
our complex. The season ends with a picnic for the T-ball players.
TENNIS
Registration is in May for our tennis classes. Tennis begins the end of
June and runs for 6 weeks. Instruction is for ages 9 through Adult.
Classes meet twice a week for jr. beginners, jr. advanced, senior youth
beginners, senior beginners and high school drills. Classes are held
at the courts on the City complex.

TOURNAMENTS
The first Tournament is the Southgate Open and is scheduled for July 18,
19 & 20 for adults. The second Tournament is the Junior Open and

AMUSEMENT PARK TICKETS
Amusement Park ticket sales are available for purchase at the Recreation
office during the months of May through mid-September. Our
business hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. Cash only.
CONCERTS IN THE PARK
During the Summer months the Southgate Special
Events Commission hosts the "Concerts In The Park Series" for
all ages to enjoy. They are held the 3rd Tuesday in June, July
and August in the gazebo located in front of City Hall. If it rains, the concert
is moved inside the Civic Center Banquet Hall. Call 734-258-3035

MID-SUMMER CHILDREN’S
FESTIVAL
All are
invited to the Mid-Summer Children’s Festival held on the last Tuesday
evening in July on the front lawn of city hall. There will be lots of
games, music, live interactive entertainment and refreshments for
everyone. Bring the whole family and enjoy the festival.

DOWNRIVER CRUISE
Southgate is one of the Downriver communities to host The Downriver
Cruise, check out our calendar of events page for this years dates, times
and more information. Musical
entertainment starts Friday evening at the MEIJER parking lot. The Cruise
officially starts on Saturday morning and runs all day while musical
entertainment is provided by various bands or a DJ and inflatable
amusements and games for children. Different car shows
are exhibited throughout the weekend.
GREAT LAKES LIVE
STEAMERS
Every third weekend at Kiwanis Park we offer
free train rides, weather permitting from the months of May thru
November. Kiwanis Park is located at the southwest corner of Trenton road
and Leroy Street. Train times for those weekends are noon - 4 PM both
Saturday and Sunday. Donations welcome.
HERITAGE DAYS
The City of Southgate celebrates their Heritage
Days during the Memorial Weekend. We host an activity filled event
for all ages to enjoy. A carnival is set up in the west end
parking lot of the complex from Friday through Monday. In
the Civic Center Arena we have food, craft booths, activities and music for everyone
to enjoy. A car show will be held on Saturday in the Library lot. The
weekend is kicked off on Friday evening by a parade (Eureka Rd, west to
Dix-Toledo Rd to City Hall). The children can enjoy the petting zoo
and pony rides on Saturday afternoon and the fireworks display on Saturday night.
Sunday is Family Day and activities are geared toward the children.
Clowns, magicians, dancing and ice-skating exhibitions as well as games
and a moonwalk are available for the children. If you’re interested in
reserving a food or craft booth for Heritage Days, please contact the Recreation office.
HALLOWEEN & CHRISTMAS HOUSE
DECORATING CONTESTS
Each year the City of Southgate residents can register for the
Halloween and/or Christmas house decorating contest. The special
events committee judge the homes entered in the contest and decide on
the top three places. The winners are presented with a framed
certificate and a restaurant gift card at the city council meeting.

PEPSI PITCH, HIT & RUN
This national skills program provides boys and girls, ages 7-14, the
opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting & running abilities.
Local competitions take place at Homer Howard Park the end of April.
PUNT, PASS & KICK
The NFL PEPSI Punt, Pass & Kick program creates a lively and engaging
forum for boys and girls ages 8-15 to compete separately against their
peers in punting, passing, and kicking skills. Local competitions take
place during August and September at Homer Howard Park.
TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY
Each year the City of Southgate hosts a Tree
Lighting Ceremony to kick off the Christmas Season. This event is
held on the first Friday in December at 7:00 pm in front of City Hall.
A pastor, from a different resident church each year, is invited to give
an inspirational speech after which the mayor addresses the assembly.
Christmas carols are sung and the city complex is then lighted by the
flip of a switch. Santa arrives in a bright red fire truck with
lights and horns blaring, and receives the key to the City from the Mayor.
After the ceremony there are refreshments served and children's entertainment inside City Hall.
Santa Claus is also available to receive children's wish list.
